Will Tiger hold a third straight trophy this weekend?

We here at tgiab.com would like to thank our loyal readers for putting up with our second summer sabbatical in a row.  But, let’s be honest, who wants to write a blog when the sun is shining and there is outdoor drinking to be had?  I’m sure you agree that our two months of sparse posting was likely a good thing, as it has allowed us to return rejuvenated for football season.  However, before we start waxing poetic about Clausen to Tate, Clausen to Floyd, Clausen to Rudolph (and hopefully a running game), we thought we should mention one of our favorite passtimes.  That is, Major Championship Golf.  This weekend we have the fourth and final major of the year.  While we all watched the first two, only to see our champion, Tiger, struggle to finishes a few shots off the lead, we were able to put aside our indifference to golf that does not include Tiger at the British (he missed the cut, in case you didn’t notice), when Tom Watson was the star and almost won the Open at the ripe old age of 59.  The question is, what does this weekend hold (besides two-a-days for the Irish football team).Odds on Favorite:  Tiger Woods

We love Tiger here at tgiab.com, and like the oddsmakers, we are likely never to think someone else is going to win a major, unless Tiger is hurt (or someone else takes the time to write the preview).  Here’s why Tiger will win: (a) He has won two straight tournaments on the PGA Tour, which is in contrast to the last three majors where he had only won his previous start, and not his previous two starts.  This has to count for something.

(b) He hasn’t won one yet this year and I just kind of expect him to win one a year.

(c) I think he will make up for missing the British Open’s cut by dominating this weekend.

Sentimental Favorite: Tom Watson

Since he wasn’t able to get it done in Britain, I’m hoping he can find his way into contention at the PGA.  For some reason, now that I saw an old guy almost win a major, I want to see that same old guy actually win a major.  It’d be fun, and I’d even put my Tiger bias away to see it happen (maybe).

Second Sentimental Favorite: Phil Mickelson

He’s back after his wife’s surgery last month.  You have to root for the guy who has his priorities straight.  Here was Mickelson, who has golfed very well this year, stepping back from the game to be with his wife.  I thought that was great.  So, I guess I’d root for him this year if Tiger and Watson can’t win, which is saying something because I usually root for someone else to beat him (not really sure why…).

Happy he will be there to put on a show: John Daly

Man, I’m glad the lovable Daly won the PGA in 1991, because that means we get to see him play for a major, and not sit outside in a parking lot selling stuff out of his RV.  This guy just adds excitement to every tournament he is in.

Happy you will be there this weekend, John

Happy you will be there this weekend, John

I really don’t think anyone has a shot at this thing outside of these four powerhouses.  In fact, I half expect the tournament to cut everyone not named Woods, Mickelson, Watson and Daly.  But if they don’t, and people like Harrington, Garcia, et al., are still in the field, I’d put my money on Tiger.

And, to get you ready for Irish football:
