Charlie Weis is not Tyrone Willingham.
Charlie Weis works his ass off.
Charlie Weis has a genuine and deep love for Notre Dame.
Charlie Weis is not currently succeeding at Notre Dame.
Can/Will this change? I don’t know.
I hate to beat a topic that has been beaten more than Tina Turner, but I really do want Charlie Weis to succeed. It is such a different situation than we had under Tyrone Willingham. Tyrone did not love Notre Dame. Tyrone did not work his ass off. Tyrone did not recruit like Charlie. So what the F is the problem?
I don’t know. Maybe Charlie Weis is not a good Head Football Coach. Maybe Charlie Weis is the epitome of an NFL Offensive Coordinator. Maybe his gameplanning at the NFL level does not translate to success at the college level. Whatever it is, I can’t put my finger on it.
However, the real question is: Does Charlie have the capability to succeed at Notre Dame?
I think he does. I think you have to give him next year. I am not going to say that we need to win 9 games next year (but that would be my minimum expectation), but I am going to say that we need to see marked improvement in all aspects. We need to see better offensive line play. We need to see better quarterback play. We need to see better D-line play. You get the idea. We need to see better play at every single position. On top of that, we need to see a more cohesive team. We need to see a better executed gameplan, both offensively and defensively. We need to see more attitude out of the team. We need to see a personal foul because Chris Stewart continues to block a guy 20 yards down field on 5 yard run. We need to see the passion that has been missing (in my mind at least) since 2006 (and I’m not even sure if it was fully there then).
Do I have the answer? No. But I sure as hell hope Charlie does. And I think he just might.

Charlie’s answers after our worst season in recent memory were not answers, and I’m not confident he will have any after this year either. None of his moves have worked out, whether it be in the coaching ranks or on the field, and in retrospect its not really a surprise.
I don’t think he’ll be fired after this year unless we lose out, but I think he should be fired if we go 9-3 next year. Yes, Frank Solich style. I can’t find 3 losses on next year’s schedule that would be acceptable, especially given this and last years performances. I want him to succeed to, heck I wanted Willingham and Davie to succeed, but when do we stop giving the man excuses and hold him accountable for not fulfilling any promises he has made over the past 4 years? Not one.
i disagree. this is not that different than willingham. neither are good coachs. but for some reason we look the other way for weis and hope he succeeds while we count down the days until willingham is out at a school we have no ties to.
My biggest problem with Willingham is that he did not even seem to care if he succeeded. I thought he was going through the motions, and he thought that his stoic look on the sidelines and holding up the #1 sign for the rare occurrence when we had the chance at an extra point would keep him employed.
I think this is a much different situation. Charlie led us to two BCS games, which can’t be overlooked as well. Granted, the 3 and 9 season was rougher than any of Ty’s.
I guess it just comes down to me wanting Charlie to succeed. I don’t want to go through the whole coach search process again, especially when we might not even be able to land a decent tier coach.
I think Charlie has the acumen to win. We found a coach that loves Notre Dame, recruits his ass off, works his ass off, and cares a shitload. I don’t want the potential of hiring someone that we are unsure of.
If he does not show marked improvement next year, then I can accept a firing. But for now, I will support Weis.
I agree with you, dogolfer. Everyone is calling for Weis’ head right now. Did we REALLY think we would go 9-3 after a 3-9 season? Heck, we’re expecting freshmen and sophomores to win all the games when the seniors/5th year guys are doing little. Why is Lambert still playing? What changes were made to the depth chart after the Pitt game? I’m a diehard ND fan — always will be — and will stand behind Weis — a little longer. I’m still hoping for a 7-5 season and a bowl win. GO IRISH; BEAT NAVY!
What is going to change in year 5? 9 yards against USC in the first half. Not a offensive showing.
@yojoe – The thoughts that you are referring to happened after the Pitt loss. The mood over at tgiab.com has changed. While I can’t speak for dogolfer, I believe that the general idea is that Charlie needs to go, or at least make massive changes in order to save his job. The real question is who can we realistically get to replace Weis?
Looks like he is there for at least one more year. No more excuses about Ty’s recruits.
