TGIAB Product Review: John Daly Golf Clubs

This Friday, I was fortunate enough to find an amazing advertisement in the newspaper for a new 18-peice set of John Daly CS-91 golf clubs for $159, down from a regular price of $399.

So, for a career golfer who has never had an 18-round score under 115, this seemed like an obvious purchase.  Historically, I golf one round per year, and I had already used up my quota over Memorial Day weekend last month, which has been detailed in the Shotgun Start post.

But, I decided that I needed to step up my game, and with a weekend trip scheduled to Central Oregon with all of its great golfing, I required my own set of clubs.

So, first I checked out the Big 5 Sporting Goods store near my place in Portland, and they were all out of right-handed clubs.  I was beginning to know what kind of pain Tiger was going through during the US Open, while he was golfing 91 holes with a broken leg, a torn ACL, and coming off knee surgery…..I really wanted those clubs and it hurt me that they didn’t have any!  So I made the Portland store call the store in Bend, OR (a mere 3-1/2 hours away) and hold a set for me, which I picked up the next morning while I was kind of in the neighborhood.

So, later that afternoon with a 1:25 tee time at Crooked River Ranch 45 minutes north of Bend, I tried out the clubs with amazingly stunning results.  Armed with my 460cc driver, 3-Wood, 5-Wood, Hybrid 3, Irons 4 through P (no sand wedge), and a putter, I dominated every aspect of this course.  I don’t really need to go into much detail, but I shot a 96 without cheating, and had 4 pars.  Now, this might not sound impressive to some of you out there, but this was probably 20 strokes below my best ever before this point, and it’s obviously all due to the clubs.  Also, because I realized that I didn’t even have a sand wedge, I willed myself to never hit any balls into a sand trap.  I think it’s also the first time I played 18 holes and didn’t put a single ball into the sand.

By far, the most impressive club ever is the Hybrid 3.  It hit amazingly well off the tee at one hole where we needed lay up short of some water, and it’s great to hit off the fairway on par 5′s for your second shot.  In the greatest shot ever of my career, I landed on the green and 10 feet from the pin after hitting this club from 200+ yards away (too bad this was after shanking an earlier shot, so I sank the putt to save par instead of a birdie).

Here’s a picture of the bag at the teebox of the 5th hole, overlooking a canyon around which the hole doglegs. We All Go Out!

Speaking of the bag, the awesomeness of this set does not end with the clubs.  The bag is great, with lots of pockets, the double shoulder strap, John Daly’s autograph in two places, and his John Daly signature “Lion” logo on the bag and club covers.  In case you didn’t know, John Daly’s nickname is the Lion, and you should start referring to him as such.  I think I might start calling him the Lion King, as Disney so blatantly ripped off his logo for their Broadway play.  You be the judge:

So, overall, I obviously give these clubs two thumbs up.  John Daly’s contagious love for golf has invigorated me into trying it more, and his clubs have stepped up my game to the next level.  For any of you out there needing new clubs, or who are casual golf fans, I recommend buying these clubs.  For one thing, I know none of you will be watching any golf now that Tiger is out for the season, so take that free time to hit the links yourself.

  1. Did you strategically place that PBR 40 next to the clubs, or did it just happen to be there?

  2. Strategery. I just happened to have it in my fridge and I figured that JD would approve.
