Devastation!

Not since Johnny Ballgame retired in 1999, or the Blake Street Bombers disassembled in 1997, have I been this devastated.  This isn’t some kind of hyperbole either.  This is true, heart dropping, tear jerking, “what will I do now” devastation.  Tiger Woods, my favorite athlete in the 2000′s, has called it quits until 2009.  Sure, the Rockies are heating up and the Nuggets are about to trade for the Detroit Pistons, but nothing will quell my sadness until I see Eldrick tee-off into the deep stuff on the left and save par to keep the lead in a PGA tournament.

I haven’t been as excited as I was during the 2008 US Open since Terrell Davis scored the clinching touchdown in Super Bowl XXXII.  The only athlete who will ever compete with, and possilby overtake, MJ’s popularity and dominance in America’s sports world has to hang them up for the next 9 months.  He played in 7 tournaments this year and won 5 of them.  These aren’t head to head competitions either, these are 1 vs. at least 125, and he never backed down.  Not even a broken leg and “torn ACL” could keep this man from competing.  I’m not an avid golfer, but I understand the physical and mental toll 9 holes will take on a person, let alone 91 holes to win America’s Championship while walking on one good wheel.  I was hoping that he would take off a month and win the British and then take off another month and win the PGA, but my hopes have been shattered.  Let us all pray that Tiger will be back in April of 2009 to begin his quest for the Grand Slam.

  1. come on, 7 tournaments in 6 months. the guy works less than i do. you won’t even notice he’s gone.

  2. If I swung as hard as Tiger did my ACL would be vaporized. I pitty those Anterior Cruciaterucials that he has. Does anyone know where we can send him flowers? Flowers are a nice gesture for a speedy recovery.
